Diwali is a festival of light, family gatherings and community celebration. Fireworks can add excitement, but they are only one part of the occasion. A well-planned celebration also considers people, location, timing, lighting, food and general safety.
Before selecting fireworks, think about where they will be used, who will be present and what type of effect is appropriate for the available space. A product that looks suitable in a catalogue may not be appropriate for a small residential location.
Use fireworks only in an appropriate open area. Narrow lanes, balconies, enclosed spaces and areas close to buildings, vehicles, dry vegetation or overhead wires can create hazards. Keeping Children Safe
Children often enjoy watching fireworks, but young children should not handle fireworks alone. PESO specifically advises against allowing small children to handle fireworks and recommends adult supervision. Create a clear viewing area so children can enjoy the celebration without entering the ignition zone.
Prepare before lighting anything. Keep fireworks in their original packaging until needed. Keep water readily available. Make sure adults know who is responsible for the lighting area. PESO recommends suitable clothing, including thick cotton clothing and securing loose garments.
Use one firework at a time. Other people should watch from a safe distance. Never hold fireworks while lighting them, place them inside containers, or point or throw them at people.
Timing, Misfires and Clean-Up
Timing matters. Fireworks rules can include restrictions on sound, timing, location and product characteristics. Requirements can vary by place and may change from one festival season to another. Check current local directions rather than relying on an old social-media post or a previous year's schedule.
A failed firework should never be treated as an invitation to try again. PESO advises not approaching a misfired firework immediately and not tampering with it. Its public guidance also advises waiting and soaking a dud in water before disposal. Never bend over a product that has just failed and never relight it.
